Shanghai raid: Jie’en Church leader Hu Yile held 7 days

ChinaAid reported that on August 30, 2026, more than 30 officials entered unregistered Jie’en Church in Shanghai’s Hongkou District, recorded congregants’ IDs, dispersed the service, and placed leader Hu Yile in seven-day administrative detention. Relevant Hongkou departments had not commented publicly as of ChinaAid’s September 3 report.

According to ChinaAid (September 3), a joint team of local police, Hongkou Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau staff, subdistrict officials, and security entered Jie’en Church’s meeting site on the seventh floor of an auxiliary building at 358 Haining Road around 8 a.m. Sunday August 30.

ChinaAid said authorities registered identification of people present, ordered everyone to leave, and took church leader Hu Yile into seven-day administrative detention. The organization identified Hu as the widow of Xu Guoxing, a longtime Shanghai house-church figure who died in June 2025.

ChinaAid said relevant Hongkou District departments had not publicly commented on the raid or detention as of its report. This brief records ChinaAid’s account.
