Nebraska voters on Tuesday, Nov. 3, rejected a pair of ballot initiatives that would have legalized online sports betting statewide, according to unofficial returns. Initiative 441, which would have set up rules and taxes for mobile wagering, failed 54.5% to 45.5%, WOWT reported. Initiative 440, a companion constitutional amendment, failed by about 55% to 45%. Both had to pass for online betting to become legal.
The initiatives were sponsored by Tax Relief Nebraska, which turned to a petition drive after the measures stalled in the Legislature. The group spent more than $22 million, WOWT reported. RG.org reported that nearly all of the group's money came from the betting companies DraftKings and FanDuel. Supporters had said tax revenue from the wagers would go toward property tax relief.
Nate Grasz, executive director of the Nebraska Family Alliance, said voters "chose to protect kids, families, and student athletes from predatory online gambling," according to WOWT.
