Alabama voters on Tuesday, Nov. 3, approved Amendment 3, which adds requirements on the Pledge of Allegiance and student-led prayer in public schools to the state constitution. Unofficial results from the Alabama Secretary of State, compiled by Alabama Political Reporter with all 67 counties reporting, show 974,152 votes (62.6%) in favor and 582,838 (37.4%) against.

The amendment requires local school boards to adopt policies for the Pledge to be said at the start of each school day. It also requires boards to allow prayer that students initiate and lead. Participation in both stays voluntary, and students may opt out, al.com reported. The state Fair Ballot Commission said the measure brings no new taxes or costs.

Alabama law already provided for a voluntary Pledge and protected student-led prayer. The amendment places those provisions in the constitution. al.com noted that federal courts have long barred public schools from compelling the Pledge or sponsoring religious exercises, so school boards will need to write their policies carefully.
